Build Quality

One factor that really stands out is looking at the design and build of the T2i. Look at the back of the camera there is a noticeable difference from the other HDSLRs. The biggest is the buttons. Canon has removed the scroll wheel and inserted buttons. The second big difference in the material of the body. More plastic and less mag-alloy material.

Incredible Possibilities (Most important)

While this camera is not perfect (None is), it has an incredible potential. First of all $800 bucks are you kidding me! If you have been griping about this camera because you already own a 7D (me included), shut up and by one! If you already have a HDSLR this makes a perfect B camera. and if you don’t have a HDSLR what are you waiting for!?

This is the perfect interview/documentary tool. for the price of 1 5D you could pick up 3 550D’s! If one overheats grab one of the others. Its a no brainer! I would highly recommend you go over to Prolost and read Stu Maschwitz’s The Revenge of no excuses post. Stu makes a lot of good points on this camera and its impact.

Finally this is great news for indie filmmakers. To be able to shoot video at this quality for such a low price is great. Sure we will be seeing 10 times more crap on Vimeo than we already do, but I am happy to see an outlet for creatives to affordably shoot great images, which will hopefully spark an interest to become better storytellers.

You saved me shit loads of money. Was just about to buy 7D, but after reading your article and little research my t2i is in the post.

Do keep in mind you don’t have color temperature white balance on the T2i. I have the 7D and wouldn’t use the T2i as my A cam for that reason. And as if you didn’t study this enough here is a video that accurately shows some pros cons of the T2i: http://vimeo.com/9887877

I’m an indie film maker and the script to me is most important. The camera does matter, but the question i asked myself was, does those technical stuff like rolling shutter, color temperature and white balance really matter? can i work my way around it? and yes, surely i can ! and the best part is that i can use my saved money to pay my actors and make them happy.
    Thanks a lot you guys.

You right on track. I wish more filmmakers started with the script as #1 priority! But don’t let bad images take away from your story. Rolling shutter you can deal with but WB is a little tricker. The danger of auto wb is that is has a delay and is not very smart. For example a couple months back I was using it on a set and everything looked great when all a sudden in the middle of a take my talent moved her head just a little and a red reflection behind her was revealed. At this the Auto white balance completely flipped out and tried to compensate for it. Lets just say post was a nightmare. But this is a rarity and it you are carful with you lighting you will be fine. That said all these cameras are nothing more than tool. That used right can beautifully compliment your story. Keep up the great work!
