So check it out, remember the top handle rig I talked about? Well using the same parts you can mount any follow focus with a 1/4 inch mounting point to your Magic Arm! Check out the video to see how I did this with my D|Focus.

Check it out, DVD Spindles are actually 15mm in diameter! So you can use them as rods. I’ve tested them will some Redrock gear and they work great.
NOTE: These “rods” are plastic. So don’t put too much faith into them. So if you put your 5D and a huge lens, monitor and battery pack on them and it breaks, don’t come running back here to flame me. Be smart.

The Project: A Couple months ago I was approached by Director Kaj Kjellesvig to help shoot a music video. The Goal for this video was to create a vessel to generate ad revenue and encourage people to donate towards the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Getting into the HDSLR game isn’t a cheap move. While there are cheap rigs and gear out there, often they are poorly build and/or limited to only a few uses. This rig, on the other hand, is one that I really like using and its only $20 (price varies these days). Thanks to Phil Hoyt for turning me onto this.
Here are the Parts I added to customize the rig further:
And keep in mind these are the parts I already had. I am sure you could find more affordable parts to make it work for you.

Robin Schmidt (also know as El Skid), recently posted a video and blog post showing off his “Beastmaster” rig. The rig is designed around two cameras. One 5D and a 7D. While this setup seems utterly absurd, there is logic and reason to the madness. Robin explains in his blog post:
“The kind of stuff we’re shooting involves some pretty crazy stunts, like walking down a busy high street wearing a bacon bikini etc. etc. and we really don’t want to hang around too long. Having the two cameras going at the same time means we don’t need to stick around for any longer than we need to. He does a lot of talking to camera and there’s usually a lot of cross-cutting.”

The HDSLR Mobile Hybrid Rig is a response to the HDSLR revolution combining stills and video in production. This rig was conceived for the shooter who desires a quick and mobile solution for both DSLR video and stills. The idea was a rig that would offer stabilization for video while still offering a small form factor for photography.
