Control Your Camera Via iPad or iPhone with CamRanger

I have been looking for something like this for a while, but every time I thought I found a solution it turned out to require another laptop or wireless network.

FINALLY something that just plugs into the camera and works. Will hopefully be able to try this and get a review out to you guys.

Some of the CamRanger features:

  • Capture & View Images - Capture images in all drive modes. Then view full resolution images in JPG or Canon RAW and optionally save to an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. CamRanger is a great wireless tethering solution.
  • Live View – Wirelessly stream live view to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. Complete focusing control with touch focus, incremental adjustments, and focus stacking.
  • View & Edit Camera Settings - Remotely change and view camera settings: Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, White Balance, Drive/Shooting Mode (Single, Continuous, etc.), AF, Metering Mode, Image Format, Auto Exposure Mode, and Exposure Compensation and Bracketing.
  • Record Movies - Wirelessly record movies to view and edit later. CamRanger supports touch focusing during movie recording for many Nikon and Canon cameras.
  • Intervalometer / HDR - Setup intervalometer (time lapse) or HDR on your CamRanger. No need for your iOS device to remain connected after the initial setup.
  • Macro & Focus Stacking - Perfect for macro photography where your camera is in awkward locations or very precise focus control is needed. Use automatic focus stacking for enhanced depth of field.

I saw these folks at MacWorld. The tech is impressive, but has one stumbling block for me. I primarily use my DSLR for video production, and while CamRanger can start and stop recording, it cannot maintain live-view on your tablet during recording. That’s a deal breaker for me. If you’re just wanting to use it for stills, it’s amazing right now.

One of the reps at their booth at MacWorld said they’re working on getting live-view during recording, but until then, I’m using DSLR Controller on a Nexus7 tablet. It requires a wired connection to the tablet, which is a bit of a downside, but it does work well. (About 25 fps display with about half a second delay.)

Hmm live view on recording works great on my 5D Mark III, and on my 7D. I think this has to do with which camera you have. I use the touch focusing feature frequently while recording movies on the 5D Mark III. Look at the camera chart on CamRanger’s website they have which cameras have more video features, the better the camera more video features are allowed it seems.

What a brilliant device. I’d love one of these for wildlife and macro photography.

Thanks for this clarification. I shoot with a t3i, and CamRanger doesn’t offer live view during video capture. I kind of forgot that there are other kinds of cameras!

Do you find that the touch focusing can eliminate the use of a follow-focus, or does it hunt too much?
