Final Cut Pro X – From Joy to Despair

We’ve had tornado weather out here in Chicago last week, and comcast internet had a blackout in this area for several days. And of course thats when Apple releases Final Cut Pro X. To add insult to injury, you have to download it from the App Store… And while I wasn’t surprised by that, I was surprise when the internet connection came back on and I started catching up on tweets. The hate was rampant. What had started out as love, joy and excited had quickly turned into a bitter hate exude by the weeping of editors online. I could sense the despair in the digital air.

And then I found this piece.

I think it sums up perfectly the feelings of FCP editors around the world. So before you go research the price of Premier or Avid take a look at this great video displayed above.

Blah blah blah. Final Cut wasn’t designed for Hollywood. Apple got off track and let “professionals” bloat the software, drive up it’s complexity and cost, and ruin a great tool that every day people and indie film makers can use to make great work.

Apple simply corrected their previous mistake with this release. If you’re not happy, take your ball and go home. Taking FCP back to its roots was a ballsy decision by Apple, but the right one. If you want to cry about it, feel free. But don’t expect everyone to jump on the hate wagon.

what happened to the video?! I imagine Apple threatened to sue the guy that made it…

I found out on twitter Vimeo was the jerk that took it down. But I found it on Youtube. Drink in while you can!

One of the main reasons it would have been dragged from Vimeo is that it contravened copyright. Vimeo would have surely dragged it as it contravened its conditions for upload. I mean really, using Apple’s own copyrighted material without permission to slag Apple off is really smart. A great career move no doubt!

Seriously? Tell that to all the people who make a living cutting on Final Cut pro. Go troll somewhere else.

Well I’m not paying $300 and not giving FCPX a chance. It’s different but I think with time people will learn to use it well. For a hobbiest like me, it works. Give FCPX a chance!

at 1:40, trying to “position” the clip on timeline. Now we need to use the position tool (letter “P”) to put the clip where we want.

No no no, I think you’re confusing this with imovie.

What you, and this naive video are missing, is that Final Cut Pro 7 goes nowhere when you install FCPX.

It’s still there. Go use it, and get your work done. Apple has hinted that EDL/XML will be part of a future update, but the reality is that editors that need these features are in the minority. The workflow is changing.

FCPX is revolutionary… and 99% of all the crying about is from old-dogs that refuse to learn new tricks. I

‘ve been an independent FCP editor for many years, and FCPX was certainly a shock. But after spending some quality time with it, (including multi-camera productions) I can honestly say it blows everything out of the water…
