So its looking like we are going to hear more about the Canon 5D mkIII on Friday March 2nd. How excited are you guys about this? Do you think the suggested price of $3500 is going to fly for video people? I guess my thoughts are that it has a lot of proving to do at that price. For $3500 you’re most of the way to an Sony FS100 ($4699 after rebate at the moment). I am definitely looking forward to seeing how the new 5D is going to stack up to what we are seeing now.

Here are some 5D mkIII specs from Canon Rumors:

  • 22mp
  • 61pt AF
  • 100% VF
  • 3.2? LCD
  • Dual CF/SD Card Slots
  • Price: Around $3500 USD
  • Announcement on March 2, 2012 (Depending where you are on earth)

I was pretty damn excited about this camera. I wanted to switch to a full frame sensor for a couple of years now. But if $3,500 is the actual price, I’ll just continue to happily use my 7D.

very excited, but hoping that the 5dIII can hit the market for around 3K top, traditionally Canon have been a little cheaper than nikon, but in my opinion superior in performance for photo-video

Add me to the excited list. I’m ready to make the move to a full frame.

I’m pretty stoked, just so that I can now afford the cheaper 5d Mk II ! :)

I’m excited for the potential price drop for used Mk II’s!

I’ve been shooting the 5DII for years (with an earlier 5D as my 2nd still camera). I’ll look at the other features of the MkIII when it comes out, but so far I’m really liking the 61 AF points (if they’re spread out further than the current ones and if many are BOTH horiz. & vert.). That would make it my primary still camera. Otherwise, I’ll happily “settle” for another used 5DII. I really want a “B” roll camera which has my 5DII’s low light capability.

Sounds awesome. But what I’m excited about is a potential mk2 price drop which would be stellar.

The Sony camera is irrelevant to those of us who need to shoot both stills and video. The 5D III price is high but I paid $3200 for my 5D II almost 4 years ago and haven’t regretted a penny of it. I will say, though, that I’m going to wait and see what’s coming up to replace the 7D and 60D. But yeah, I’m excited.

It is interesting, although at that price point I’d probably be more interested in the Nikon D800 which (for me) has the best combination of stills/video capabilities and I wouldn’t need to sell the rest of my Nikon gear :)

I’ll jump into the excited camp… But more along the lines of this means the MK2 will drop in $ and I can finally afford one!

I came to your page after i watched Dugdale’s clip.  Add me to the list as soon the price is lowered to $2500.00 or lower

    meh

seems like there’s a list of (basic) stuff that could of been added, of course we’ll have to see about the improved latitude that would be great but $3,500 seems steep honestly I was more interested in lens announcements

    no usb3
    60p at 720
no dng raw file (for time lapse – After Effects)

Two stops more light sensitivity is huge. Less moire is great and a BIGGER sensor than the $16,000 C300! Nice. Would like to know how soon it overheats. My 5D MKII overheats so am needing another camera to alternate while one cools off. (I’m in Hawaii)

61 auto focus point sounded good until they showed how clumped together they are in the viewfinder.
Those red sensors are just below where the top thirds intersections fall and just above the bottom thirds intersections are. I’m often needing to focus on a subject just outside of that range, so I put one of my sensors on the subject, knowing I’m going to crop, throwing away so many of those much-touted pixels, or going to manual focus as I did decades ago.

You can buy TWO refurb 5DII’s for about the price of a 5DIII:http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_214217_-1
