If the prospect of filmmaking tools being available in mass at your finger tips does not make you giddy with excitement than I don’t know what will.
The Beginning
We have seen what can happen when a camera with a large sensor is offered to consumers for under $2,000. And we are only getting started. These low cost large sensor HDSLRs have not only excited the poor and humble but professionals like Shane Hurlbut, Vincent Laforet and Rodney Charters. Many of whom have decide to shoot exclusively with HDSLRs.
To Be Continued… NOW
The introduction of these little cameras has been the beginning of a revolution, but in the big scheme of things they are just a twinkle in the eye of a big change towering over the film industry and how we think about video.
At NAB 2010 we saw the continuation of large sensor interchangeable lens capable cameras. Panasonic and Sony being the main players. But Just this week Sony showed a new Sony camcorder currently in development. A camcorder with an APS HD CMOS sensor and the ability to use interchangeable lenses. Sony also introduced their ultra compact DSLRs which also sport a APS HD CMOS sensor. Kids… this is just down right sick. A camera the size of a wallet that can produce incredible video quality. Below is a video teasing us with images of interchangeable lens camera systems.
Important Things to Consider…
While all these tools are a revolutionary move forward, one thing that is more important now than ever is structure and education. Just because we can shoot at f/1.2 and can shoot cinema level images does not make us better filmmakers or filmmakers for that matter. Structure is going to be everything from here on out.
Its a good day to be an independent filmmaker.
