Disclaimer: I was given this item for free in exchange for a review. But like all my reviews I am being as objective as possible.

I have been using the H4n for as long as I have been shooting on HDSLRs. It has taken good care of me and I have not had any major problems with it. So if people think I am being unfair to the H4n they should also try the Tascam DR100… They might find themselves picking one up. Even though the H4n has become the most used audio recorder by HDSLR shooters, I believe the DR100 MkII has a serious edge on it.

Gear Mentioned:

Tascam DR100 MkII

Zoom H4n

I had a chance to review the cute little Micro Muff from www.Micromuff.com. Its a great idea for those using the built in microphone on the AGC enabled DSLRs outdoors. Its totally worth the price and can actually make the on camera microphone somewhat useable again.

if you don’t shoot outdoors much, or use an external microphone this obviously isn’t a necessary buy.

Do they work? Yes but they aren’t invincible. I tested it in front of a fan blasting the camera set on high. You can hear there is still some flutter noise, but this was an extreme test. Watch the video below after the podcast to see a more realistic world test.

I have recently been following the SCENEBLOCK gang, and have really enjoyed their work and projects. Recently they shared a great little DIY project to improve the quality of the tiny built in mics on Canon DSLRs. I am definitely going to give this a shot and would like to see how well it performs in several different sound environments.

Check out this video showing some results of the muff being attached, then check out the guide. Read the full article →
